Halloween: From Victorian Gothic to Friendly Frights — Crafting the Season Your Way

As the nights grow longer and autumn deepens, Halloween arrives with all its creative possibilities — a season of imagination, storytelling, and playful spookiness. It’s my favourite time of year for journaling, and I love creating Halloween digitals and junk journals. For paper crafters, it’s the perfect excuse to bring out the lace, the pumpkins, and the glitter to craft pages that capture the season’s magic.

🕯️ A Glimpse into Victorian Gothic Halloween

If you love atmosphere and mystery, lean into the darker side of Halloween with Victorian gothic-inspired spreads. Think layered textures, candlelit tones, and ghostly silhouettes. Popular elements include:

  • Black lace, vellum overlays, and torn edges for a moody, aged look
  • Intricate paper cutouts of bats, ravens, or skeleton keys
  • Dark florals, old book pages, and sepia-toned ephemera
  • Fortune-telling or spiritualist-inspired imagery & photographs — tarot, crystal balls, and stars

These details create hauntingly beautiful pages perfect for memory-keeping or seasonal journaling.

🎃 American Halloween: Playful and Community-Centered

In the United States particularly, by the early 20th century, Halloween parties and trick-or-treating became beloved traditions.

Not every Halloween has to be spine-tingling! So if you prefer the lighthearted side of the season, you can build spreads that feel cheerful and fun. Ideas include:

  • Pastel or patterned pumpkins, smiling ghosts, and friendly black cats
  • Glittery accents, washi tape, and bright candy-inspired colors
  • Collaged trick-or-treat ephemera like vintage candy wrappers or tickets
  • Cute stickers, doodles, or stamped motifs to soften the spooky feel

Spooky & Sweet Halloween Vibe

The beauty of junk journaling is that you don’t have to choose just one style. You can create a spread full of dark romance one day, and a bright candy-colored layout the next. A few ways to blend the vibes:

  • Pair vintage black-and-white imagery with pops of orange or gold
  • Use soft watercolor washes behind gothic silhouettes
  • Layer delicate lace with playful pumpkin cutouts
  • Create “haunted story” pages that balance eerie illustrations with whimsical handwritten notes

Why Halloween Is Perfect for A Journal

Halloween is all about storytelling — and that’s what makes it such a rich theme for junk journaling. Every page can hold a memory, a story, or simply a playful experiment with color and texture.

Whether you craft with dark romance or cheerful charm, Halloween gives you permission to slow down, play with paper, and celebrate creativity in its most magical form.
