How to Use Old Text Documents in Junk Journals + Free Printable

Why Old Text Documents Work in Junk Journals

There is something quietly grounding about old text.

Faded lettering and vintage-style documents offer a timeless quality. Even when the original context of the text is unknown, these pages carry a sense of history that feels especially at home in junk journals.

For me, this connection goes a little deeper. Having studied typography, I have a lifelong love for fonts, documents, and all kinds of text. When I find a page with unusual spacing, a decorative serif, or simply an old-school font I haven’t seen in years, it feels like a tiny treasure waiting to be used in a journal.

Old text works so well in junk journaling because it adds texture without demanding attention. It allows a page to feel layered and complete without needing heavy decoration. The words become part of the background — something to rest on rather than read.

This makes old text documents ideal for journals that are meant to be used slowly, imperfectly, and often.

How to Use Vintage Text Pages in Junk Journals

Vintage text documents are incredibly versatile and can be used throughout a junk journal in many different ways.

You might use them as:

  • full background pages or base layers
  • torn paper layers beneath photos or writing
  • envelope wraps or envelope liners
  • pockets, belly bands, or folded page inserts

The coloured pages add warmth and softness to a spread, while the black and white versions are perfect for printing on different papers, altering with ink or tea staining, or leaving untouched.

Often, the most effective way to use old text is to let it remain visible. A single piece of washi tape, a stitched edge, or a small scrap layered on top is enough. The page doesn’t need to be filled or explained.

One of the reasons old text pages are so well loved is how little they ask of you.

No decorating is required. No page needs to be finished. Even using a single piece is enough.

Junk journaling doesn’t need to be productive to be meaningful. Sometimes it’s simply about keeping your hands busy and giving your thoughts a quiet place to land.

These pages are not meant to stay pristine.

They are meant to be folded, trimmed, layered, and handled. Used as backgrounds. Tucked into pockets. Returned to again and again.

Whether you download a single page or use the full collection, I hope these vintage text documents find their way into journals that are well-loved — creased at the edges, softened with use, and quietly full of care.
